Deeside Monitor Farm Summer 24 Open Meet

Tuesday 16th July, 12.30pm for a 1pm start with a 3.30 finish then a BBQ

Forage and Finishing at the Deeside Monitor Farm

July is a key month for finishing beef cattle off grass. Grass quality and quantity begins to decline while cattle weights need to increase.

Duncan Morrison, the Deeside Monitor Farmer will open the meeting by asking ‘Is finishing bulls at grass better or worse financially than finishing intensively?’ and will provide facts and figures – you can decide!

Gueast speaker, Lanarkshire farmer Michael Shannon, will explain how he finishes all his cattle off grass and forage crops and markets his livestock through his shop under the Damn Delicious brand.

The meeting at Duncan and Claire Morrison’s Upper Ingliston farm, Inverurie, also showcases low-input spraying of docks with SoilEssentials’ SKAi sprayer, protecting mixed species swards.

Jill Hunter, Harbro Beef & Sheep Nutritionist, will discuss the options where cattle need a nutritional boost.

We have Highland Meats buyer, Stuart Annand to explain what he looks for in finishing cattle and how farmers can optimise the price they receive.

James Law will explain the work of NORGRASS, a forum for those with an active interest in the science and practice of grass and forage production and utilisation

The event will finish with a BBQ supplied by local company, Louise’s Farm Kitchen.
